Position Overview
The Junior Accountant – Cross-Border Personal Tax will assist in providing tax compliance services to individuals with Canadian and U.S. tax obligations. This position is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career accountant who is interested in developing a specialized career in cross-border taxation.

Working closely with senior accountants, managers, and partners, you will gain hands-on experience preparing Canadian and U.S. personal tax returns, analyzing investment information, researching tax issues, and communicating with clients and tax authorities. We are looking for someone who is eager to learn, detail-oriented, and committed to providing exceptional client service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare Canadian and U.S. individual income tax returns, as well as related information reporting forms, under the supervision of senior team members.
  • Maintain accurate and organized electronic working paper files in accordance with firm standards.
  • Analyze investment account statements and other financial information and prepare detailed working papers to support income, capital gains, and other tax reporting for both Canadian and U.S. income tax returns.
  • Correspond with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) regarding tax notices, inquiries, and compliance matters.
  • Communicate professionally with clients to request information, answer questions, and ensure timely completion of tax engagements.
  • Provide exceptional client service through clear written and verbal communication and prompt responses to client inquiries in English.
  • Continuously develop technical knowledge of Canadian and U.S. individual income tax legislation, the Canada–U.S. Income Tax Treaty, and foreign tax credit rules, including the proper sourcing of income in each country.
  • Conduct tax research and assist with special projects as assigned.
  • Assist with workflow management to ensure client deadlines are met.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or associate’s degree in Accounting, Commerce, Finance, or a related discipline or bachelor’s degree in an unrelated discipline with a diploma in accounting.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with Canadian and/or U.S. tax software is an asset but not required.
  • A genuine interest in developing a career specializing in Canada–U.S. cross-border taxation.
